Water is a limiting resource in Mediterranean ecosystems. During the summer, the heat and the lack of rain reduce the water availability for plants, animals and human beings.
Those areas in which water remains along the year become habitats with high biodiversity levels.
A diverse
community of animal and plants, as well as remains of human settlements can be
observed in the wetlands around Mérida.
